Our bariatric surgeons, nutritionists and psychologists are each involved in providing you with ongoing support through your weight loss surgery and beyond, helping you understand the benefits, as well as the changes and challenges, which accompany life after bariatric surgery.

Dr. Atwa is a skilled surgeon known for his caring and compassionate bedside manner, garnishing awards as Top Surgeon and the Most Compassionate Doctor awards (2011 - 2013) He is board certified in general surgery with a mini-fellowship in bariatric surgery. He currently is Chief & Director of Department of Surgery at Mather & St. Charles Hospitals, Port Jefferson, NY.

He focuses on minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of various surgical problems in the abdomen. In addition to performing laparoscopic procedures on the esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, appendix, colon, and abdominal hernias, he also performs weight loss surgeries such as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.

Leslie Welsch 1Leslie Welsch, Our Registered Dietitian – Nutritionist, with over 15 years of private practice experience, has now joined Dr. Atwa and Dr. Thompson at Long Island Laparoscopic practicing bariatric nutrition as well as regular medical nutrition therapy. Leslie supports non-bariatric patients who seek non-surgical assistance with customized meal plans which are designed to match each client's lifestyle, food preferences, and medical needs.

Irlene King1Irlene King is our Bariatric Coordinator. She has over 17 years of experience working in private healthcare and hospital facilities here on Long Island coordinating patient activities towards achieving better health. Irlene has joined Long Island laparoscopic Doctors where her focus is on educating patients on pre-and post-operative needs, diet and control of other conditions, such as hypertension diabetes and heart disease.

Irlene plays an important role in helping our patients succeed long after their surgery is finished and your new life begins. Irlene has deep connection to her patients that allows her to understand in a special way their needs, fears, hopes and frustrations. She has a knack for restoring confidence and self-esteem in those who most need it.
