The magnets can be placed one of two ways: swallowed and guided into position endoscopically, or placed surgically through small openings in the stomach and small bowel. In the swallowed approach, the process begins in our outpatient department, where you swallow the first specially designed magnet. This magnet travels naturally through your digestive system, first into the stomach, then into the upper part of the small intestine (the duodenum). About two hours later, you are brought into the operating room.
Using advanced laparoscopy, a minimally invasive technique guided by a small camera, our surgical team locates the first magnet and guides it further down to the lower part of the small intestine (the ileum). At the same time, a thin scope is used to place the second magnet into the stomach, then carefully guide it just past the stomach’s lower opening (the pylorus) and into the duodenum. In the surgical approach, both magnets are placed directly through small openings in the stomach and small bowel. Either way, the two magnets are then aligned so they can connect.
Once the magnets connect, they create a strong hold that gently compresses the tissue between them. Our surgical team then closes any small gaps in the surrounding tissue to prevent future complications, and you are moved to the recovery area.
Over the next two to three weeks, steady pressure from the magnets allows the tissue between them to break down naturally, while the surrounding tissue heals and joins together.
