Dr. Atwa is a skilled surgeon known for his caring and compassionate bedside manner, garnishing awards as Top Surgeon and the Most Compassionate Doctor awards (2011 – 2017) and recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt award form John T. Mather Hospital in 2018. He is board certified in general surgery with a mini-fellowship in bariatric surgery. He currently is Chief of Surgery and member at large of the medical board at Mather Hospital / Northwell Heath and Director / Chief of Surgery and member of the medical board at St. Charles Hospitals, Port Jefferson, NY.
Jon Leung, D.O., FACOS
Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgeon, Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm
Dr. Leung, FACOS is a general surgeon with advanced specialty training in minimally invasive surgery as well as bariatric surgery. He focuses on minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of various surgical problems in the abdomen. In addition to performing laparoscopic procedures on the esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, appendix, colon, and abdominal hernias, he also performs weight loss surgeries such as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.
James L. Groff D.O.
General & Trauma Surgeon, Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm
Dr. Groff, D.O is a general surgeon with advanced specialty training in trauma. Critical and acute care surgery. He is the newest member of Long Island Laparoscopic surgical team and focuses on minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of various surgical problems. Dr. Groff utilizes laparoscopic surgery techniques that create small incisions with minimal pain and scarring. He performs surgical procedures of the abdomen such as surgery of the stomach, esophagus (reflux), gallbladder, colon, spleen, and hernia repair. He also has a special interest in the field of trauma and acute care surgery.
Leslie Welsch, MS, RD, CDE, CDN
Dietitian-Nutritionalist, Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm
Leslie is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist. Leslie received her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from The University of Delaware. She received her Master of Science in Medical Biology Nutrition from Long Island University, CW Post where she earned the Outstanding Nutrition Award for her thesis work on Diabetes. Leslie began her career in the hospital setting, but quickly began working for various physicians on Long Island counseling their patients privately.
Maud Colas, BS, CPN
Bariatric Coordinator, Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm
Maude Colas is our Bariatric Coordinator. She has over 18 years’ experience in healthcare management focusing on healthcare administration, patient navigation & advocacy. Maud has proven track record of supporting and resolving patient health challenges with solutions that lead to achieving better health. Maud has joined Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm where her focus is on educating patients on pre-and post-operative needs, diet and control of other conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.
Maud plays an important role in helping our patients succeed long after surgery is finished and your new life begins. Maud has deep connections with her patients that allows her to understand in a special way their needs, fears, hopes and frustrations. She has a knack for restoring confidence and self-esteem in those who need it most.
