At Long Island Laparoscopic Doctors, we are often asked by our patients who want to lose weight if they qualify for weight loss surgery. It is a great – and necessary – question!

Historically, weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, was typically recommended for individuals who have a body mass index (or BMI) of 40 or higher, OR a BMI of 35-40 with additional health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea.

These guidelines were originally set back in 1991. However, in October of 2022, two of the world’s leading authorities on bariatric and metabolic surgery – the American Society for metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and metabolic Disorders (IFSO) issued new evidence-based clinical guidelines.

While adoption by insurance companies is yet to be determined, the newly established evidenced based clinical guidelines for recommending weight loss surgery include having a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more regardless of presence, absence, or severity of obesity -related conditions.  And…weight loss surgery can also now be considered for people with a BMI of 30-34.9 with other metabolic disease and in ‘appropriately selected children and adolescents.’

In addition to meeting these criteria, there are other factors that are commonly considered such as:

• Your previous attempts at weight loss
• Your age and overall health status
• Your personal motivation and commitment to making lifestyle changes after surgery
• Your willingness to participate in post-surgical follow-up care and support
