Colorectal surgery is a specialized field focused on treating disorders affecting the colon, rectum, and anus.  While the idea of undergoing surgery may seem daunting, gaining insight into its purpose and potential benefits can offer clarity as well as some comfort.

Understanding the types of problems colorectal surgery addresses is crucial for informed decision-making.  Here are some of the types of problems that colorectal surgery addresses:

  1. Colorectal Cancer:  Among the most common reasons for colorectal surgery is the presence of colorectal cancer.  Surgery aims to remove cancerous tumors from your colon or rectum.  Depending on the stage and location of the cancer, various surgical approaches may be used, including colectomy which is removal of a part of the colon, proctectomy which is removal of part or all of the rectum, or colostomy which involves creating an opening – or stoma – in the abdomen for waste to exit into a bag.
  2. Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD: Inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can lead to inflammation, ulcers, and other complications in the colon and rectum. For patients who don’t respond to medications, or have severe complications such as a stricture, fistula, or abscess, surgery may be recommended.
  3. Diverticular Disease: Diverticular disease occurs when small pouches – called diverticula –  form in the walls of the colon. If these pouches become inflamed or infected it is called diverticulitis. Surgery may be necessary to remove the affected part of the colon, drain abscesses (or infected pouches) that may have formed, or create a colostomy in severe cases.
  4. Rectal Prolapse: Rectal prolapse happens when the rectum protrudes from the anus. Surgery aims to repair the rectal tissue and strengthen supporting muscles that support the rectum.
  5. Finally, there may be various conditions affecting the anus, like hemorrhoids, fistulas, or fissures. If so, these may require surgical intervention for relief.

Colorectal surgery plays a vital role in treating a wide range of conditions as described.  Whether it is cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or other colorectal disorders, surgery can provide effective relief and improve quality of life for many patients.

If you or a loved one is facing colorectal surgery or have questions, it is important to consult with an experienced surgeon to discuss the best treatment options, tailored to your specific needs.
